The fattened swards….

The fattened swards....

The fattened swards have
Met their limits,
And now mingle with
Rotating earthen bodies
That puff and flex
Across unknowable distances,
Yielding habitations erected by
A guilty love of baked cornmeal
Most nights by the fire below.

Tranquility is no more
Stable than the most
Disconnected thatchwork region
That squirms and writhes
With every compression
From above;
Opening,
Closing,
Blossoming,
Shriveling,
Anew.

  1. Okay, I’m going to admit ignorance (which my children will attest – I don’t do lightly) – I can’t recall ever coming face-to-face with, ‘sward.’ Through your gorgeous writing, I was certain ‘sward’ had something to do with land formations – yippy, I wasn’t incorrect – that makes me only half-ignorant!
Thank you for this lovely piece and thank you for teaching me something new today.
